Ba Ji Quan: An extract form the form and soul of bear and tiger (part 1/3)

Master Ng Choong Fah (4kb)

Ba Ji Quan (eight polar fist) is also known as ba zi or ba zi quan in the ancient time. It had been very popular even before the Ming Dynasty (refer to ji xiao xin shu) a book written by a Ming Dynasty warrior, qi ju guang. The heritage of Ba Ji Quan, was only systematic recorded during the time of the kang xie dynasty, by Lai and Pi in a place called Wu Zhong in the Meng village in Chang state.

The Ba Ji successor, Wu Zhong, was the master of the 14th prince, prince xung qin jun’s escort, during the dynasty kang xie. Wu Zhong was famous for his skill in punch and lance. He was also called ‘King of Lance in Wu Zhong. In the following few generations, more dexterous students emerged. A student, Li Shu Wen was the most remarkable of all. Throughout his life, he didn’t find any opponent who could beat him. The wushu arena recognized that the Pi Gua (prying technique) which was a part of Ba Ji Quan, together with Ba Ji Quan is powerful enough to chase the ghost away.

Li Shu Wen had many students who were also spectacular masters in the wushu arena. Among them were Xu Lan Zhou, Ren Guo Dong, Liu Hu Chen, Zhang Niang Wu, Na Yu Kun, Han Hua Chen, Zhao Shu De, Dou Shi Long, Xu Zhi Ching, Ding Zhong Jie, Liu Xu Dong (Master Liu’s nephew). Ma Fong Tu, Ying Tu, Cang Tu started with Pi Gua initially, then, they learned Ba Ji Quan. Later, Ying Tu, Hang Hua Chen, Zhao Shu de modified Ba Ji Quan and introduced it to Nanking Central National Wuchu organization, turning Ba Ji Quan into a compulsory subject.

Ba Ji Quan was not very common in Malaysia. I was enthusiastic in Wushu when I was young. When I was studying in Taiwan, I sought everywhere to find a master who could teach me martial art, surprisingly, I met up with my mentor, Liu Gong Yun Qiao. (he is also the creator of Ba Gua Group, Gong Bao Tian and the Tang Lang Group (praying mantis), Ding Zi Chen; Master of all escorts of the President of Taiwan for many years. Master Liu was also a warrior Japanese army was afraid of, during the occupation of Japan during The Second World War.

My Master learned wushu from his grandfather’s body guard, Zhang Yao Ting (also known as swift foot) when he was little. When he was seven, my master’s father employed Master Li Shu Wen to teach him Wushu for more than 10 years. Master Liu Gong Yun Qiao then followed his master, visited a few other district. They arrived at ShangTong and were well received by Gong Bao Tian, a specialist in Ba Gua Men (Ba Gua Group). He then brought my master back to his hometown to teach.

Once there was a Japanese wushu master arrive at Tian Jing to challenged the Chinese wushu. Master Liu Yun Qiao attended to him, and he managed to beat the opponent within the first step. He has not failed in any of his challenges, and thus was renowned in many part of Chine. (Author has written an article on Ba Ji Quan in Nan Yang Siang Pao on 1976, February 22nd).
