Ba Ji Quan: An extract form the form and soul of bear and tiger (part 2/3)

Master Ng Choong Fah (4kb)

A Brief Description of Training on Ba Ji Quan

Fortunately, Ba Ji Quan was able to maintain its original practice method. From the basic, it was sequentially and clearly arranged. This is something a wushu enthusiast is looking for. This practice method is divided into 3 levels and within this three levels, it is further subdivided into 3 sub stages. The main levels namely, siao ba ji (little 8 polar), da ba ji (huge 8 polar), liu da kai (6 openness).

Ba Ji Quan extracts the form of Bear and tiger. That is why the basic is tough and difficult. Based on author’s experience for the past few years, most of the students gave up at the beginning stage.

The first level being siao ba ji, taking Ba Ji Quan’s essentials as basic. The event to practice is rather complex but it is clear. Hidden, evolution, also known as square, corner (triangle) and round (evolution).

1. From siao ba ji pose or known as dead pose, little pose, 8 polar to form a flow of strength in pose. To obtain an equilibrium on movement and body application, ie hand, steps and body movement coordination of inner and outer as a whole, to apply strength extracted from Ba ji Chuan, ie shi zi jing (crossed strength), bao zha jing(explosive strength) and chan si jing (cross linked strength).

2. Upon completion, again from siao ba ji pose, learn to coordinate the inner and outer as a whole, to accumulate its strength to extend and contract, at the same time, practice chan si jing, chen zui jing (sinking strength), mo pan jing (spiral strength) and zan jing (extend strength).

3. When that has been achieved, from siao ba ji’s practice, apply the techniques acquired earlier as a whole, smoothen it, and commensurate it with the unique breathing method, with the hope to complete the first level. Theoretically, one needs about 3 years to complete this level, but of course it differs with individuals.

The second level is using da ba ji (huge eight polar) as its basic essence, explicitly expressing the pure force of siao ba ji, in achieving the next level of mastering Ba Ji Quan. This forceful, swift, fierce and minute level is further subdivided into 3 substages.

The third level being liu da kai (six openness). This level fully represents the sole of Ba Ji Quan. It is only passed down to apprentice and not disclose in public. It has various training method base on the objective of training. Liu da kai can also be ramified into three substages.
